This gauze filter - just like the yery similiar designed filter in the cylinder head of the 1.4 Multiair engines -  does not have any replacement intervall if you believe the manufacturer (Alfa Romeo). So it will never be exchanged during the service. Every neglected / "unserviced" filter will clog up with debris with the time which results in a turbocompressor which non longer receives a sufficient quantity of pressureized oil. This is certainly one of the reasons why the 1.8 TBi engines are infamous for turbocompressor failures.
So exchange this filter regularily if you want to allow your engine's turbocompressor to live longer.
