Looking at the history of Alfa Romeo lorries we realise that this Milan company is the oldest Italian producer of commercial vehicles after Fiat, (who continues under the Iveco banner.) The first Alfa lorry was made in 1914, the last in 1988. And yet, despite 74 years of commercial production the Alfa Romeo name does not make one think immediately of lorries. Even when one does try to picture a working vehicle with the Alfa shield on the front the lightweight and medium sized vehicles are the first that come to mind, simply because these were what constituted Alfa industrial vehicles in the period from the early 1960's to the 1980's. For many people it will be a surprise to learn that Alfa Romeo built real top weight lorries over a thirty year period, the largest and heaviest vehicles legally allowed at the time with powerful diesel engines.
